Hemp genetics institutions have actively been in the quest for patents to safeguard their intellectual assets after working for ages to create novel genetics.

Charlotte’s Web Holdings that’s based in Colorado got two utility patents during mid-January for its recent feminized hybrid seed varieties:
- Lindorea- the firm has public availed this variety for hemp growers to purchase according to their production seasons
- Kirche- this variety has been utilized for the firm’s cultivation purposes
According to the firm, these varieties are the only ones with utility patents on hybrid feminized hemp crops. The firm has already received a plant patent and 4 utility patents for her breeding activities.
Beer Reel, Charlotte’s Web deputy president of research and development as well as cultivation, said that acquiring patented hemp feminized hybrids shows that there’s a chance for improving hemp by using identical approaches like other agronomic plants using organic breeding strategies.
Reel added that Charlotte’s Web looked into all available options to safeguard its genetics and opted for a utility patent due to its top-tier protection.
Reel further said that PVP protection is limited to the hemp plant. PVP is available at the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).
She added that Charlotte’s Web utility patents help protect its hemp plants, breeding efforts and the commodities it produces using its genetics.
